Islamorada Fishing Charter July 10, 2009
I had the pleasure of fishing with Lew and his son Drew for a full day out of Smuggler's Cove Marine in Islamorada. The wind forced our hand to run way back into the Everglades. After stopping by Flamingo to catch some bait we continued our way to East Cape. East Cape is actually the South West tip of Florida main land. There are no roads only natural beaches! An amazing site in itself. The action started on the first cast at East Cape....A small Snook. In the first 15 minutes we had a few Snook and a small Tarpon. The fishing was hot and getting hotter. On the outgoing tide the Father and Son Team caught around 24 Snook and one Tarpon. The tide turned and Lew hooked what we all believe to be a huge Snook and we couldn't stop him. We lost him in the mangrove roots. Then the Grouper bite started. A nice Black Grouper was lost on the mangrove bank so we upped the gear and clamped down the drags.A few smaller Grouper were caught and then Drew caught the biggest Goliath Grouper. Around 40- 50 pounds. He did a great job getting the fish to the boat with the current ripping. The wind really picked up so we headed back toward Islamorada. We stopped in a mullet mud looking for some small Tarpon that were there the week before. Trout, Trout and more Trout! The day was getting close to ending so we decided to run back near the marina and make one drift looking for Tarpon and Snook. We saw a few Tarpon and then Lew hooked up with a nice Snook. A great way to end a great day! Just a note.... I finally went in the water after 6 years of charters. I have been told it would happen sooner or later. For the record I was only in to the waist... Thank you trolling motor and Lew!

Hey Troy,
Great Blog. Just signed on and saw the description of our day. It was a great day and you did a great job.Just a minor correction - it was Drew that caught the big grouper
Again - thanks for a great day and glad you didn't go completely in the water with all those bull sharks... Stay well and look forward to fishing with you again soon.
All the best Drew
