Calm Winds From Key Largo to the East Cape

This was not your normal day. Rick , Brandon and John fished today and the wind was calm. I have been fishing with Rick and his son for several years now and the one constant has always been horrible weather!! Their usual day has high winds, thunder storms, rain. Today it was calm and we took advantage of it. We left South Key Largo at 8am and ran across the Florida Bay to East Cape. We started the day hammering Trout. A simple swim bait did the trick. We then ran into the Gulf to a wreck looking for Permit. We did one drift and then on the second Rick's reel was screaming. The fish took a crab on a jig head. When Rick finally got the fish to the boat is was a 30# plus Goliath Grouper.....Not what we were looking for, but Rick did a great job on 15# test. As we were running back toward Tavernier because we had a slack tide I pulled up to an island that sometimes hold Redfish and today was no exception. A school of around 20 fish were sunning themselves on the flat! Brandon hooked up right away and caught a nice over slot Red.
After a lost Snook and another Redfish it was time to head back. Another great day in the Florida Keys!
